Scholarships

Below is a list of scholarships and grants offered by various organizations for education abroad students. We encourage you to apply to those for which you are eligible, and to apply early. Check with the Financial Aid Office to find out how a scholarship or grant, if secured, will affect your financial aid package.


IES Scholarships : A variety of scholarships available to students who study abroad through IES.

ISEP Scholarships : A free search tool for study abroad scholarships as well as an explanation of the different types of scholarships offered

CIEE Scholarships : A variety of scholarships available to students who study abroad through CIEE.

USAC Scholarships A variety of scholarships are available to students who study abroad through USAC. Scholarships are also available to the children, siblings, and spouses of alumni (a paying participant who previously attended a USAC program).

Rainbow Scholarship The Rainbow is awarded to LGBT students who want to pursue meaningful, intensive education programs abroad and is made possible by the generous donations and support of numerous international education professionals that are dedicated to helping LGBT students participate in international programs.

Baden-Württemberg Scholarship: 500-1400 Euros/month to cover living expenses of students going to Pacific's exchange partners in Germany.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan : $2,500-$4,000 awards for semester of full year of study in Japan

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarships : Pell-eligible students studying for semester or year up to $5,000

Guide to Online Schools Study Abroad Scholarship : $2,000. You may apply this scholarship to tuition, housing, or traveling fees.

Michigan State University List of Scholarships for Students of Color

National Security Education Program (NSEP) - David L. Boren Scholarship Grants for study of a foreign language critical to US security, aimed at cultivating cultural fluency and language ability. Primarily the Boren Scholarship (specific country options). Note that NSEP grants have a service obligation.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant : 45 grants of $1000 awarded each year to a student who is already a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

Freeman-ASIA Scholarship : $3,000-$7,000  For students who demonstrate a financial need, provides assistance for study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Go! Study Abroad Scholarship : $15,000 award for studying in New Zealand

Turkish Coalition of America Scholarships available to students who have been accepted to a language program or university study abroad program in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tortuga: $1000 Scholarship awarded biannually. Student must demonstrate a love for travel and backpacking.

Asher Fergusson: $1800 Scholarship available. Student must submit a 400-500 word application essay. If chosen, student must write another 1,500 word essay after their time abroad.    


Italiarail: $1,000 plus a 3 day Italy Rail Pass. Student must plan to study abroad in Italy, submit their FASFA, and a 150 word essay on why you want to study abroad in Italy.


FG Scholars & Start the Adventure: Part of the GRIT program STA offers $2500 to students for the international experience portion of the GRIT program. The GRIT scholarship from the Foundation for Global Scholars is a multistage program with a sumit for students, study abroad, and a project upon their return

Hostelling International: Need based scholarship which offers students a total of $2000 for Study Abroad, provided they come from one of the areas in the US where HI USA has a presence. Requires the submission of photos and travel surveys.

Butex: Awards  £500  for study at an affiliated university in the UK for study in the semester or the academic year.

GO Overseas: Awards students a $500 scholarship based on a short essay, creative photo, and social media promotion.  

Go Overseas Ireland: Offers full tuition and a stipend to cover study at participating universities in Ireland. Applicants must submit a short essay and creative photo.

University Language: Submit a photo and 100-200 Word description of your study abroad experience. Chance to win $500 via a photo contest.

Scholarship Search Engines

FastWeb  Web site provides free customized scholarship search after user fills out profile. E-mail updates are then provided of scholarships based on the profile. Links with FinAid.

FinAid! (National Association of Financial Aid Administrators)  Web site of the main US professional association for financial aid administrators provides scholarship searches and extensive information about financial aid. Links with FastWeb.

GoAbroad.com  GoAbroad is also committed to providing students the most comprehensive resource for international education and alternative travel

Institute of International Education  Financial Resources for International Study. Free comprehensive search of directories of international scholarships

Study Abroad Scholarships  A free search tool for study abroad scholarships as well as an explanation of the different types of scholarships offered.

Diversity Abroad: A free online database of scholarships available to minority, low income, and first generation students.  

US State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (formerly USIA) Official information about all Fulbright programs (for study, research, and teaching abroad), about other official exchange programs, and some information about US government regulations concerning international educational exchange.
